Little Girl has graduated. We are now sampling solid foods. So far, she has tried rice cereal, oatmeal, pears, apples, squash, sweet potatoes and carrots (see above for orange-y evidence). Anyway, I love this time. I love watching her face as she tastes something new. I love watching her purse her lips and crinkle her eyes. I even love watching her spit stuff. Of course, I especially love the smiles.
How amazing is it to try new things? To experience a new taste, a new sensation, a new story? Isn’t this what makes life delicious, the discovery of life’s infinite flavors, the stumbling into self? Because the things we experience, the things we taste and do and come to love, these are all part of who we are.
How often do you try new things? New foods? New activities? New outlooks? As adults, are we encouraged to sample newness as much as we were as kids? I don’t know. I do think we get set in our ways, in our tastes and desires, and forget what it’s like, and how amazing it can be, to find something new.
Speaking of new things, I have embarked on a new and nutty exercise regime. It is unlike anything I’ve done before and I’m taxing and testing my body in ways I never have before. I shall tell you more about it soon, so stay tuned!

How often do you try new things? Do you think that as adults we often become overly set in our ways, and more resistant to discovering new things? Did you enjoy the baby food days?

Trying new things, for me, is exhilarating and nerve wracking. I like the idea, but actually doing it is hard! And maybe that’s why I need to take this reminder to heart, I mean babies and toddlers try new things all the time!
Oh my goodness! You and I are on the same wavelength today. My post this morning was called “Learning and Trying.”
I am not necessarily trying new things so much as trying to change the way I think. I am struggling w/ the mommy tendency to WORRY.
I love trying new things! I really do try to pick up a new skill fairly often to keep growing as a person. I took some painting classes in college, learned to make balloon animals, and last winter I made an attempt to teach myself to play guitar. Hopefully, as the weather cools and I’m inside more I’ll be able to get back into that. I’m also hoping to learn how to use my sewing machine a bit better and to take a stab at making jewelry. I’ve never been sad to pick up a new skill, I’ve just had some attempts that were a bit more successful that others
and I do love seeing others take a chance on something new as well. I love it that hubby is adventurous, too- not only will he eat any new creation I put in front of him, he likes to try new skills too. It’s been really neat watching as he learns how to blacksmith, and even though he doesn’t think he’s very good, I love hanging my coat or kitchen stuff on a metal hook he made himself. I think we can all be our own worst critics, and unfortunately, I think that’s what holds us back from trying new things all too often.
I was a pretty simple, solitary person until I met my boyfriend a few years ago — and he’s a very outgoing sort of guy! Since I was born and raised in the town where I still live, I guess I had a sort of “been there, done that” mentality to everything. When I met Spencer, a New York transplant, everything became new again. I went back to places I hadn’t visited in years. Tried restaurants I’d written off. Started taking little road trips all over the place.
Now I try new things all the time! Foods, vacation spots, books — I’ve learned how to be adventurous again. And I definitely think that’s a gift.
I always in my mind up to trying new things, and I start out very willing to do so. Something’s I pull off, such as relocating from London to New York, and then other things I feel nervous about, but I know that newness and change are mostly good things to add to life.
Great post yet again.
Trying new things often gives me an edge of anxiety. But as I get older, I am more willing to take the plunge into something unfamiliar. I think with time, you learn to ask, what is the worst thing that can happen if you try something new?
