What’s in Your Fridge?

Posted On: 07.03.12

This is a recent shot of the interior of the Rowley fridge. And, never fret, I have not traded in my beloved Pinot Grigio for beer as it might appear in this image. In case you are interested, the copious beer bottles are leftover from a recent shindig and we will break ‘em out for Sister C’s Leaving-NYC-Party (wah) soon.

Something I notice by studying this shot? We are practically dairy (and non-dairy) hoarders. At any given point, we have at least four types of milk on hand: organic whole for Little Girl, organic 1% for her big sisters, soy milk for Nanny, almond milk for moi. Then there are the sundry other milkyproducts – yogurt sippies and squeezes, Horizon milk boxes, even ProBugs.

In the event that you dig trivia (and expensive but yummy food products for your wee ones), ProBugs are kefir. Kefir is, in my humble opinion, an especially snazzy word and makes me think of Keifer Sutherland who makes me think of Kevin Bacon, whom, by the way, I recently saw twice in one day — first at Big’s ballet class and then on my childhood block — all of which I took it as some cosmic sign of something I’ve yet to determine. Painfully random, I know.

What’s in your fridge? What kind of milk products do you and your creatures consume? Do you have any aspirations to overhaul your own or your family’s nutrition like I sometimes do? Any fun celeb sightings of late?

Oh, and...

  • The Tooth Fairy Came! Big Girl lost her very first tooth last Friday at camp. I've never seen her so excited. And on Friday night, the fairy came and left my girl a purple toy ticket which led me to conclude that the fairy is way clever. And yesterday? Big Girl was having lunch with her cousin by the pool (we are in Cape Cod) and he too lost his first tooth. So there's been lots of tooth talk around here. Any fun first tooth stories? What do your local fairies do/bring?

I am sitting at my computer at work while it’s my husbands day off. You inspired me to make the phone call & ask him to clean out our fridge. Thank you for bringing me little daily inspirations!

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Sounds like you have a great hubby, Morgan! Love the idea that my posts are little daily inspirations. A high compliment indeed. Happy Tuesday :)

  2. We are BIG fans of Horizon milk boxes around here! Currently our fridge is EMPTY as we had to toss about $300 worth of products in the trash due to spoilage from the massive storm and great power outage of 2012 in our area (my blog has details!) and when/if we get power back, we will be going on a much needed shopping trip.

That Kevin Bacon thing is very cool and not random at all, but when I read it I kept thinking of, and giggling, about the game 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. I am happy to tell my friends that through my blog, to your blog, to you, to Kevin Bacon puts me 3 degrees to Kevin Bacon and I think that makes me the current leader among the group so thanks for posting :)

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

This whole Kevin Bacon thing has me smiling :) And that’s terrible about the storm. Will definitely check out your blog for details; you have me sufficiently intrigued. Oh and now I am wondering how many Horizon boxes we go through on a monthly basis… I think the number would freak me out. I just tell myself that they are organic and pretend that they are not full of sugar :) Thanks, Amanda!

I was at my sister’s house this past weekend, and my sisters, my mom and I had a hilarious moment where we realized that despite currently living in three different cities and shopping at four different grocery stores, each of our four refrigerators contain exactly the same products, placed in practically the same location in the fridge. Weird, no?

A few weeks ago I ran into Jerry Seinfeld and his wife in Central Park. Other than that, it’s been a slow few months in the celeb-sighting world :)

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

I love the idea that there might be something about the art of fridging (yup, made that up) that runs in families. A fascinating thought, no? Jerry Seinfeld is a good one. Have been thinking of doing an ADR Top Ten celeb sightings because I’ve had some good ones over the years :)

  4. That is a lot of dairy! I wonder if upbringing has anything to do with it. I’ve never really been a fan of the food group- except for of course cheese. (I’d give up all other food for cheese!). The taste of milk kind of grosses me out. And I read a study once that pointed out humans are the only mammal to continue drinking milk past infancy- and another creatures milk to top it off! It was a weird, obvious realization. But kudos on the almond milk! That makes everything taste better :)

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Yes, Husband and I have talked about that (unsettling) fact that we humans are the only mammal to continue drinking milk… I have at times pondered veganism but then it seems too extreme. I guess there is perhaps a happy medium between my current fridge and veganism though? Thanks, Michelle!

  5. I’ve heard of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but this is taking it to a whole new level! =)

We are also weird hoarders of dairy. Whole milk for the toddler. Skim milk for the adults. Whole chocolate milk for the adults (once you go *there*, it’s hard to turn back). Half and half for the husband’s coffee habit. Greek yogurt for the whole family. Leftover Go-Gurts we will not touch (purchased for the convenience until I tasted them – awful – but, can’t throw them out, for reasons I do not know). And a random container of sour cream for the yet to be planned taco night. Good grief!

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Oh my, I think you guys might be worse (or better) than us dairy-wise! Love the whole concept of a standby container of sour cream. What a wonderful detail. Thanks, Nilsa!

  6. Usually our fridge has a lot of leftovers in it. We have a tendency to cook a few dishes that will last for the week when my boyfriend has a day off, and then eat it over the course of the next week. It’s been awesome because we’re eating way better now.

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Such a good way to do things. If we ever cooked, I’d make sure to do the leftover thing :) One day, right? Thanks! And Happy 4th.

  7. Nice photo :) My son had a mentor that still works as a doctor and he is in his eighties, he swore by Kefir. He drinks it every day. So now we drink it too. :)

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Oh, love that I have encountered a kindred kefir fan. So funny but Lifeway – the company that makes our kefir – somehow found out about this post and left a comment. Fun, huh? Happy 4th!

  8. I don’t think I could take a photo of my fridge as I’m too embarrassed by the mess and utter lack of, um, goodness. We do have lots of strawberries and peaches, that my kids tend to eat in 2 days. :)

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Focus on the positive – strawberries and peaches are fantastic. Isn’t it maddening how quickly kids can blow through a hearty stash of fresh fruit? Happy 4th, Amber! Hope you are feeling good. xox

  9. Do you think of Keifer Sutherland and then Kevin Bacon because of Flatliners or A Few Good Men? Or the K name?

Hilarious and awesome post. Funny, as I have been in your fridge and haven’t really thought about it. I will never open the door again without humming Footloose. I was thinking about seriously looking at more seemingly innocuous parts of Life (how we fold towels, over or under on the toilet roll, what side of the bed we sleep on) and exploring larger issues with it. Now you have inspired me to do it. Fridging (awesome word!) will be among them.

And I guess I will try kefir. Or my kid will. Does it have nuts?

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

No, it doesn’t have nuts. But bribery does :) I love the idea of exploring the way we do small things. I think this would be downright fascinating. Miss you guys! xxo

  10. We approve of this fridge.

    <3,

    Your friends at Lifeway

  11. My fridge is a scary place right now. I just opened the door and something in there yelled at me to shut it again.

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

Love it. Now you have me imagining a kids’ book about a talking fridge :) And totally relate to fridge fright… I have it often. Happy 4th, Natalie!

My ‘fridge does and doesn’t look like yours. I, too, am into dairy in a big way and, just recently, I’ve returned to fullfat dairy products. After reading the labels, it seems that so much sugar is added to lowfat products, especially things like flavored yoghurt, so I have fullfat milk and fullfat plain yoghurt. I also absolutely cannot abide lowfat cheese. One may as well just not eat cheese! Right now I have chevre, feta, brie, cottage and gouda. As it is summer and anything with a big salad is good, I also have cold cuts : salami, ham, pastrami, chorizo – and stacks of smoked salmon – and eggs. As for the diet overhaul, these are my rules : no sugar, no white flour, nothing fried, and everything as close to it’s natural form as possible….. Oh, the way my ‘fridge doesn’t look like yours is that it is alcohol-free, as is me. But you will find cans of Coke Zero, my current drug of choice!

    • Aidan Donnelley Rowley

I can’t tell you how much of this resonates with me. I feel SO much better when I eat well and eat more natural foods. And it is scary what they put in things to render them lowfat. And Coke Zero? I’m a big fan. Thanks, Tessa!

We’re big fans of Organic Valley milk. It perhaps tastes different, because they’re very local, and we’re in California. And perhaps not. We love them, though. Buy the milk in the 1/2 gallon, the lunchbox size, and the eggs.

Also no fan of low fat cheese. We currently have sharp cheddar, Gorgonzola, some variety of brie, and a baby Swiss that doesn’t taste young enough to be called baby. Bah.

I’m eyeballing that bottle of champagne in your pic, and feel it my duty to inform you that my friend from France declares that, unlike flat wines, Champagne should be stored upright, not on its side.
