The schools and subways are closed and we are snuggled up at home waiting for Sandy to pass on through. I took the above photo from our garden at around 3pm yesterday. The air was damp, the wind whispering, the afternoon eerily calm. I took the picture and went back inside to my girls who were flopped on our big old couch watching cartoons. I indulged in some drive-by tickles and twirls. I held Middle Girl’s cheeks in my hands and she said something: I know what you’re about to say. You’re going to say “I love you.” You always say that! And I smiled. And said it.
And I came here. To the screen. And thought about what to write for today. I looked up quotes about storms and found the one above which I happen to love. There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm. How wonderful, and true.
And here we are. In storm. Huddled together. Living. Loving. Learning. Always learning.

Are you hiding out from Frankenstorm too? How do you plan to spend your day(s) inside? Are you easily unnerved by severe weather reports or do you think they are often exaggerated/incorrect? Do you agree with Cather, that some things are learned best in calm, and some in storm?

I love this quote and find it to ring true time and time again. I think so lessons can only be learned as they are supposed to when your life seems to be going through a “storm”. I am on the other side of the country so I am not currently hiding out from Sandy, but stay safe and enjoy your time with your family! My sister was evacuated two nights ago to a different side of the island in Hawaii due to the tsunami warning but thankfully that turned out to be nothing. Doesn’t look like Sandy is backing down any time soon.
So scary.
That Cather quote is one of my favorites. We are doing the same! xox
I love that quote also. My office is closed today, and my move to the new house, which was supposed to be today, was rescheduled for Friday. So we are hiding out today in the cocoon of our apartment with hot drinks and pancakes, And soup and grilled cheese for later. I know the weather reports are kind of scary, but I am really liking this day, and this time. Strangely, its like the calm before our own storm of change.
I don’t usually give too much credence to doom and gloom weather reports, but we’re taking this one seriously. After Irene ravaged the area last year, nobody feels like taking chances this time around!
My personal storm today involves not letting my writer-brain get the best of me in imagining the worst possible scenarios regarding my family, and then paralyzing myself out of irrational fears. Trust and strength!
I am in the South and it is sunny and in the 60s today. But I have been thinking about all my friends on the East coast and was hoping you’d post something to let us know you are okay! Stay safe and snuggled!
Living in Florida I know what you are going through. Stay snuggled up and safe, above all safe. Sometimes the reports are exaggerated, but worth taking sersiously. Been through many a Hurricane…..The quote so fits my present life issues.
Thank you as always, for your words.
Take Care.
I don’t envy you the Frankenstorm that is headed your way. It is clearly going to be a doozy, and likely devastating for thousands. What I do envy you, though, is the opportunity/excuse/reason/obligation to hunker down and snuggle up. I’ve written a few posts in the past about how I adore “forced” down time and it often seems that inclement weather is about the only way to achieve that breed of downshift while still staying at home. I hope you all are spared power outages and other ill-effects of Sandy. And I hope you have a happy time snuggled up together.
I am tucked safely in the Midwest, so I don’t have the same, immediate concerns about how the hurricane will affect my life. But, my parents live in Boston. My brother lives in Asbury Park. And I have a gazillion friends scattered along the eastern shore from Savannah to Maine. My hope is this storm will pass quickly with no loss of life and minimal damage to homes and businesses. Will be thinking of you as the storms continues to near.
I hope you all stay safe! I work in the financial industry and we’re at a halt here in California due to the markets closure.
Love that quote and I do think it’s so true. Sometimes, you don’t learn things about yourself unless it gets stormy! I hope, you guys stay safe inside. We got away so lucky this time. I do believe sometimes the reports are exaggerated but I always say better safe than sorry.
I love the quote. Stay safe.
Love this quote!
Lovely quote. We’re hunkered down in DC too, eating and drinking and cooking and reading and nesting. I hope your family stays warm and dry! And that we can all find ways to avoid going stir crazy tomorrow.
Beautiful quote, will keep you and all those where the storm is heading in my prayers. May God watch over you and protect you during this storm.
I hope you guys have weathered the storm well and are safe. Watching in London, I was in NYC when Irene passed through but Sandy seems to have hit harder.
I just got back inside my apartment. I had to evacuate. I won’t complain about anything for a very long time considering what I have seen on the news. I’ll spend tomorrow cleaning up. Tonight I’ll enjoy the feeling of curling up with a magazine and appreciating the electricity.
I hope you and yours stayed safe during the storm.
