Mark Twain said, “Wine is a clog to the pen, not an inspiration." I think Twain is probably right and I guess I will find out. My hope is that giving up wine will create more space and serenity for writing. Deep down though, I think I have bought into the (fallacious?) idea that there is some elusive and important connection between alcohol and creativity, that the first meaningfully enhances the latter. I have no doubt that this is a question, and theme, I will return to over and over in the coming year as I move forward in my efforts to finish my book. My profound hunch? My sincere hope? Removing alcohol from my life will remove that clog to the pen. We shall see.
