A Very Important Question

VIP Question
VIP Question
What do you love?

I'm interested in two things here: (1) your answer to this question (or lack thereof); and (2) how this question makes you feel. Note: I include myself in the broad you; these questions are as much (mostly?) for me.

There's a lot of talk about passion these days. About finding our passion, and following it, but I've noticed that talk of passion, of doing what we love, can be and feel threatening. What if we don't know what we love, what we're passionate about? What does this say about us?

I think love is a better word. We all know what we love, whom we love. I know that I love my family, spending time with them. I also know that I love writing and reading and having conversations and spending time laughing with friends. I don't need to think too hard about this. It's pretty simple. I know that if I stuff my life with all of these goodies, I'm happier.

But is it really this simple? Is it ever this simple? What about all the stuff, and often important stuff (read: jobs, responsibilities, existential crises, etc, etc) that interfere with, and intrude upon, the things we most love?

And what if, even if we choose love over feel passionate about, we find ourselves without clear answers? What if we still don't know? Is it possible to live many years on this earth and not know what we love?

Big questions for a Monday morning, I know. But another thing I love: asking big, felt, unwieldy questions.

What do you love?

Do you think this is a very important question?

Do you have answers and do they easily come?

How does this question make you feel?
